i have a ac problem with my car?

my ac was working perfect last week...the other day..and i live in alabama so its hotttt....turned it on..made a "poof" sound, so i shut it off...no liquids leaking..car running perfect. tried it again today..saw a small little "poof" of steam..not smoke..car is running perfect..whats up?
