I have a 99 Toyota Corolla and the check engine light came on. I took it to Advance Auto to have them run the free diagnostic on it. They said the code was P0441 EVAP Emission Control System Purge. So my question is: What is that?!

Also, things are tight in my budget for the next month or so. If I don't get this serviced right away, am I going to end up with a bigger problem? I certainly don't mean to insinuate that I plan to neglect this; however, I just have NO money in my budget this month to have it fixed. How serious is this to the life and wellbeing of my faithful lil' car?

Also, how much can I expect this to cost to diagnose properly and repair?

For starters, relax, it's not a serious situation. There is one rather
common problem these days for this happening, and that is a
gas cap that is loose or not the correct one that was originally
on your car. A pinhole size leak can trigger this code as well as
other situations but try this first. Tighten the gas cap, have the
code cleared, and wait to see if it comes back. If this is the
issue, obviously it will not come back on again. If it is not, you
may need to have some other tests performed on the car. If you
have been smelling gasoline lately more than usual, I would take
it to a reputable repair mechanic sooner than later. But , I'm sure
you would have stated that you smelled fumes.

Hope this helps a bit...
