I have a 98 chevy blazer. My check engine light is on and how do I check whats wrong

with it.? The light has been on for a couple of months and drives perfect. Is there a kit that gives me a error code I can refer to. I really dont want to buy a new car and would like to take care of this problems. Please only respond if you have car knowledge. No dumb answers like Get a new Car.... Thanks
