I have a 98 Buick Century, there is oil in the water. Does that mean the head

could be either one but most likely head gasket

rubber breaks faster than steel just when replacing you have heads check before installing them back

Melanie, A quick way to test for external or internal coolant leaks in your motor is to have a *cooling system pressure test done. Any private mechanic or new car dealership can do this inexpensive test. If there is an internal leak the cylinder heads will have to come off. They should be checked for flatness, combustion chambers cleaned up and the chambers should be *Zyglow tested for cracks.

There is an outside chance your transmission cooler inside the right end tank of the radiator may be leaking fluid into the cooling system.

it don,t have to be a head gasket. it could be the intake gasket leaking also. as for the head being cracked you won,t know unless you pull it and see. those blocks are made of cast iron and they very seldom crack. i would have to say it lays between 3 things. a intake gasket is leaking, the head gasket is leaking or the head is cracked but like i said you won,t know until you pull them.

Either a cracked head or a blown head gasket will cause water in the oil. How hot did the engine get and for how long? You may have damaged it , so that is not fixable and may require another engine. I'd get a quote on a rebuilt engine before fixing the one you have, it will be cheaper in the long run.
