I have a 96 Mazda protege it wont pass smog something about the functional test failed,

what could it be? ? Its passes all the tests but the functional test. The man mentioned a monitor? I check out the price and its expensive. Is there anything else to look at first? Do you have any advice? Thanks in advance. God Bless.
 
with such little info , I can only assume that he means the drive cycle monitors. Which would mean a repair is in order before the monitors can be completed ,
