I have a 96 Chevy Cavalier and the ETS off and Check Engine light are on.?

My mechanic said that the only time these lights come on together is when it is in need of an oxygen sensor. I changed this, and the light still comes on, and now I can't pass my Emissions test. Does anyone have any other input on what it could be?
