I have a 95 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6 cyl 4 speed automatic that only drives in 1st?

My jeeps tranmission wont engage any other gears until you drive it for about 15 minutes and then the other gears start kicking in is there anything else that we can do with it other then replace it or rebuild or is there anything we need to check first?
