I have a 94 ford ranger. When I start it, the idle goes up and down and up and down.?

I also have a dodge dakota 98 and when I drive it when I turn it on, after about 45 seconds it starts to cut out and I have to step on it, then it starts to drive normally and won't do it again until I start it again.
I have to drive it for 5 minutes or so and it idles regularly after that. Can anyone figure it out.
 
A very common problem on mid to late 90s Fords is the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC Valve) and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR Valve). Both of these effect the vehicle's gas mileage and air flow based on a number of factors all effected by heat. After you've driven it for a while, the truck is at normal operating temperature and works correctly.

A simple diagnostic scan can determine which part has gone bad, the tests usually run around $60 and the parts from $28-$150.

It is possible that carbon has built up in the thin passages for air that feed each valve. Cleaning these usually costs the same as diagnosing the problem, and quite honestly at that point a valve has usually failed already. Find a reputable mechanic and ensure he cleans the ports when he replaces the valve.
 
its nothing serious. hard to find a car that old that still does idle 100%!

unless you get that awesome "just after an oil change" idle... :o)

wich is only after, you just get an oil change and you fire it up
