I never replaced the belt. I was told that i would need to get a new compressor and a few other things because it has not ran in so long. The guy did not even look he just heard me say it has not work in 4 years. Is this true? I was also told by a friend that it should be fine, probably just need some freon. I'm going to buy a belt and put it on as soon as i can spare some time. But is there a good chance i'll need to redue the complete ac system?

more than likely yes cause it has sit 4 so long wit out moving n its gonna be stuck in place so to speak its probally all rustd n fudged up on the inside that the fan for the comp wont turn good luck though

I would recommend you bring it to an independent shop that will totally evacuate the A/C system and check for leaks with their shop machine. Then you will get all the contaminants out of the system and recharge it properly to the exact number of pounds of refrigerant. However, at that point you may find that there's problems and the cost of repair is not worth it on an old car. That's when it's best just to roll down your windows.

when an AC is not run on and off the seals get dry and shrink leading to loss of freaon. Put a belt on and recharge if necessary. It may hold and it may leak a little,,,what have you got to lose?
If your using the new refrigerant you can get it in the store and charge it your self.
However,,you may ave to jump the compressor clutch wires to engage the compressor clutch at first. There s a low freaon safety switch in the system and if the freaon is low enough you have to override that safety so the compressor will turn on and absorb the new freon until it reaches a certain level.

It will cost you for the cold ac.They stopped using R-12 and replaced it with R-134a and since your unit was off for so long I would have the unit leak tested to see if the seals in the compressor have failed due to the new refrigerant. If the unit has a leak your system will not work for long and just waste the time in the shop and money for cold ac.The best thing to do is have the unit checked or just put a belt on the unit and see if it runs and that will give you a good idea if the seals are good or not.I hope this helps.
