"pcbuilder" is giving you some good info, but I would do a complete carb cleanup and rebuild as well, not hard to do and can be done on the tailgate of a truck, front porch, dining room table, etc.
Sitting for a year, the carb is gummy and the float setting is questionable.
Timing should be checked "asap" since that will cause "run on" also known as dieseling when the ignition is shut off and the backfiring. Backfiring can also be caused by raw fuel in the exhaust system and can cause damage to said system as well.
An oil change should be done "NOW", drive it about 500 miles at reasonable speeds and do another change, it's amazing how much water accumulates in an oil pan from condensation.
Parents bought a new '65 Coronet four door, 225 cube "leaning tower of power", three on the tree, and Sure Grip rear and an AM radio ! ! !. And they even let me drive it occassionally.
