When i shot it off it continues to run for like 3 seconds and backfires loud as hell .. Trying to figure out the problem in the cheapest way possible . I have no garage so I cant work on it myself .. Help!!

well sitting is the worst thing for a car the fuel gets gummy. the oil seperates and breaks down. water accumulates in the fuel aswell. i would do a full fuel induction service on the vehicle using the wynns pressure system. most dealers have this equipment. if you dont want to go down that road. then add one bottle of alchohol to the gas. this will remove any water wich may be in thare. then add sumthing called 44k its made by bg its difficult to find in your autoparts store thats probly an item that you would buy at a parts department at a shop. its not very expensive. add that to the tank and get yourself and oil change. also i would assume it carberated. lubercate the linkages and choke valves. if it still acts up after all that it may need new plugs wires cap and rotor. if that dont do it. and maybe a carb adjusting. a few if not all of these items should do the trick. assuming it ran fine before it sat for that amount of time. i am a mechanic. i can tell you cars can break wile sitting. it sounds strange but they do. expesialy fuel system componets and oil seals. good luck!

"pcbuilder" is giving you some good info, but I would do a complete carb cleanup and rebuild as well, not hard to do and can be done on the tailgate of a truck, front porch, dining room table, etc.

Sitting for a year, the carb is gummy and the float setting is questionable.

Timing should be checked "asap" since that will cause "run on" also known as dieseling when the ignition is shut off and the backfiring. Backfiring can also be caused by raw fuel in the exhaust system and can cause damage to said system as well.

An oil change should be done "NOW", drive it about 500 miles at reasonable speeds and do another change, it's amazing how much water accumulates in an oil pan from condensation.

Parents bought a new '65 Coronet four door, 225 cube "leaning tower of power", three on the tree, and Sure Grip rear and an AM radio ! ! !. And they even let me drive it occassionally.

old gas will jell up in the carburetor and cause this too happen to it,you may have to remove the carb and rebuild it,once this builds up in it there's nothing on the market that will really remove it and get all of it out,you usually to rebuild one that's been setting that long,if its a 2 barrel carb its a really simple one to rebuild, good luck.

Lucky you, a '65 coronet. since you cant do the work take it to a garage and have the oldest mechanic there work on it.
How much gas? Add a can of carb cleaner and fill it up, go driving
