...out of ignition switch.? Steering will not lock after turning off car, I didn't hear any kind breaking or popping sound, can someone help me, thanks.

all late model gms have a theft deterent system which unfortunately will lock the key in the ignition if the battery dies so my first question is the battery dead cause if so the key will not come out second the car has to be in park for the key to come out and last but not least the brake switch which is the switch that allows you to pull the handle from park to reverse or drive by putting the brake on could have went out hope this helps

i hope rootpoot never works for me he is wrong on most accounts. sounds like its not in park or the key tumbler has failed. tumbler failure is common on gms. heck i just did a gm truck with the same problem last week. and it was a 2004 go figure

Is is an automatic?, make sure it is engaged full into the Park position. I know this sounds stupid, because you have probably done that a few thousand times. But if you are in a hurry and panic, you may not recognize you did this.
Try moving the steering wheel back and forth (gently) as you try to take the key out of the ignition. This sometimes will work.
The nuetral safety switch may have gone bad. I hope this helps. Trying to diagnose this on the computer is frustrating for both of us, I would bet.
