I have a 2002 Accord sedan. Is 18" too big for rims?

I care a little bit more about performance than aesthetics and want to keep good cornering ability at higher speeds and want to know if 18" takes too much away from that or if that's good, as well as not looking like I'm only going for size like one would with a luxury SUV. If 18" seems to big, I'll go 17" and know I'll still have good cornering ability.
 
How about the idea of leaving design to the engineers? Larger wheels mean thinner sidewalls,with a ride no girl can stand! If you have money to spare,invest it while you are young -you will wonder why you are an old man with nothing to his name if you keep indulging your silly whims.
