I have a 1999 mazda 626 with 100K miles and the hose at bottom of the radiator blew.?

First I was told it needed a head gasket. Now, recommendation is to replace the motor. The car broke down about 200 miles from where I live. So, I want to be sure that I make the right decision with where the car is at.
 
I would ask them to show you (either in person or email pictures even) exactly why they feel it needs a head gasket AND the motor replaced. A blown head gasket can cause catastrophic damage to a motor (hydro-lock among other things), but that wouldn't be cause simply by a hose blowing.
 
why not just replace the hose that blew, refill the radiator with coolant & bleed the air out to see if it's even overheating first? there is no way they can determine you have a bad head gasket just from a blown radiator hose. unless they already did a compression leak down test to confirm that. but it doesn't make sense that you would need to replace your engine from a blown head gasket. get more info from them as to why they think you need a new engine
 
If you run a vehicle without coolant it can definitely do significant damage. Shop for a replacement "crate motor". They are used low mileage engines imported from Japan. It would be more cost effective to have one installed than to try and repair yours.
