When I went on a recent highway trip I watched the temp gauge go up and then go right back down to normal. I've never seen a car do that before and it got me a bit concerned. It was a 250 mile round trip. There is nothing leaking that I can see nothing causing the car to stop or lose power. Also it seems that I can only get heat in the car if it is running at max and it makes this horrible loud noise

Sounds like a water pump issue. Possibly not pumping water like it should. Another issue could be the large belt that runs the pump, alternator and other pieces of equipment. If the belt is not "catching" the pulley properly, it may be slipping and not driving the pump properly.

Oh yeah. And one more thing. It could be that the thermostat on the radiator simply needs replaced...or the fluid itself needs changing. The themostat is another item that regulates the heat and allows the water to flow at the proper rate though the engine.
