I have a 1994 ford explorer sport 4x4 and the push button won't engage the 4wd?

Also when I push the 4x4 button the light doesn't even light up same with the low range button that also doesn't work. Does anybody have any ideas what this could be. The engine is the 4.0 6 cylinder with 5 speed manual.
 
this system uses vacuum to engage the 4x4, if the line is disconnected or leaking that could be your problem. Your switch relay could be broken, my friends similar era blazer had that problem, replaced the switch and it works fine. Also it could be stuck, you are supposed to engage your 4x4 and drive a mile or two every few months to keep everything lubed most people dont and that is the cause of their problems, if that is the case you will probably have to take it to a shop.
 
The Explorer uses an electric transfer shift motor - not vacuum.
Check the fuse first, if it's blown, 4WD will not engage.
If the final diagnosis indicates a bad motor, check the local salvage yards and aftermarket vendors for one before bringing your Gold Master Card into a dealer parts room - the motor is ridiculously expensive.
