I have a 1990 Ford Ranger that doesn't reverse?

I have a 1990 ford ranger and it recently decided not to reverse. It drives forward but it doesn't reverse. Could some one help me figure it out before I sent it to a mechanic? And rough costs estimates would be cool too.
 
This happened to my ford contour when my mother ran it low on transmission fluid. Your car needs the transmission rebuilt or replaced. the price depends more on the car, place you bring it, or mechanic you know. You're looking around 1500+ easy. Sorry about your car :(
