I have a 1986 Searay w/ a small block chevy and wont go in resverse?

it goes right into forward just fine.when the problem first started if I tried it 3 or 4 times it would kind of slam into gear[ thats the best way to describe it] now it stalls the motor as sone as you drop into reverse.any ideas?
