I have a 1978 Honda CX500 runs good, when you let off gas it pops out of exhaust?

Spoke to someone and he said to pull one of the spark plugs off of one side and it continued to run. I did that then I went to the other side and pulled the spark plug wire and it died.
I was told it had a bad coil. So I replaced that coil, and put in new spark plugs on both sides and it still did the same thing and the engine died.
Question # 1: What can I do to fix the issue.
Question # 2: What is the spark plug gap for that year bike.
 
According to the Honda shop manual for the 1978-79 model year the correct gap for the CX500 is .024 to .028 in (0.6-0.7 mm)
 
.024-.028 gap if you are holding it off to one side and it finds (the spark) your frame it will ground out causing bike to cutout not good for your coil either...with both plugs gapped right and bike running carefully..........place your hand near the exhaust pipes and see if there is a great difference in temperature...if your feel one side is almost cold and the other hotter than summer a valve problem could exist..(exhaust valve could be bent or sticking etc.) good luck hope this helps
 
cx 500? ya don't say. liquid cooled? drive shaft v engine sorts rolls to the side when reving.. i'd suggest you sell this monster. e mail me if you ever want to part ways with this.
