what can cause this? i just bought the bike and it doesn't seem like its running on all cylanders. I have no idea what this can be from. I was told by a friend that the rings could be shot. any ideas???

Oil in the air cleaner box is because there is a crankcase vent routed up into the air cleaner. It's possible the engine may be overfull with oil. As far as the engine 'stuttering', there could be several reasons, but my first guess would be oil fouled spark plugs.

I'd get the bike into a well qualified maintenance shop and have a full service and tune up done. Then, if you are still having problems, at least the mechanics are familiar with the bike and can recommend possible repairs.

First, check your oil level with the bike vertical. If you're sucking oil up from the crankcase it'll show in your air box.
Check/clean or replace your plugs.
Now if you really think your rings might be out, check the compression. Some auto parts stores have the kit to rent. do it once, then squirt some oil into the cylinder and do it again. If the compression changes, it's the rings. If it doesn't, its the valves/head. If you don't know where your compression should be, just look for a cylinder that's about 5lbs or so different than the others.
