i have 2 gameboy advances hooked together with a gameboy link, and it won't

let me trade my pokemon? i have gold version in one and silver in the other, and every time i try, it says that the connection failed or the other one's not ready or something, and i've tried switching sides on the cable and i've tried switching to a new cable but nothing's working. anybody have any ideas on what i should do or what's wrong?
