in future try buying parts yourself and finding a mechanic to install for you. it would have been about half of that.
 
That price sounds pretty much in line with what a reputable shop would charge.

If this kind of expense bothers you there are always mechanicking classes you can take. Nothing beats the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Above all, though, don't let Backyard Billy fix stuff like this just 'cause he's cheap. It's better to let someone with a good recommendation from a friend or local BBB do it right the first time instead of arguing about it when you ask him to do it right the second time.
