i had a new engine put in my rover 45 and the mechanic did not put in anti freeze ?

the block would freeze possibly. radiator could split thru ice expansion. Really is your responsibility to check fluid levels and antifreeze content. It is in the small print of your guarantee I bet
 
It's very possible to cause engine damage. You need to drain out half the water by slackening a radiator hose & then replacing this with anti freeze. A Haynes manual will tell you the total coolant capacity - Either just let out at least half & then refill with half the total volume of anti freeze, topping up with water. Remember to keep a bit of anti freeze for the expansion or header tank.
Or, drain as completely as possible & premix anti freeze as per the container & refill from scratch.
 
The water could freeze and cause hoses to split or even worse the engine block could crack (very rare but not impossible).

Just buy some anti freeze and pour it in
