It depends on the book and the condition. First editions usually go for more. If you have first or second printings of famous books ("Tom Sawyer" or "Little Women", etc) you can be looking at serious money.
However, anything is only worth what somebody will pay for it. Economic factors set in. During bad times, people have less money available to buy luxuries.
