how do you make IX = VI, by only adding 1 line to either side?

if the first 5 answers dont get it, i will add in a hint, so check back often
*right off the bat i can think of 2 ways to solve this.
i wont give a hint because one of these answers is right. only one of them.
apparently some people have trouble understanding what "only adding 1 line to either side (not both sides, 1 side)" means
 
I know it's Roman numerals but I can't figure it out with adding one line to each side. Unless you're talking about things like minus signs, unequal signs, etc.
