I get to go see a neurologist!

UPDATE.

Ok, so I went in for a sleep study around a month ago. I slept through the night, even with all the electrodes and stuff attached to me. Strangely, I did not have any auditory hallucinations and didn't have any trouble falling asleep. But I'd had a difficult day at work and I was exhausted.

Over the next day at the lab I was put down for a half-hour nap every two hours. I knew they were monitoring me but I had no idea what they were measuring. I did have my own TV, the wireless connection was good, and the food didn't make me throw up.

Got my results back about a week before school started. The overnight study showed normal sleep patterns, good amounts of REM sleep and all that, but the daytime nap study revealed that I fall asleep abnormally faster than a normal person, a symptom of excessive daytime sleepiness and one that is compatible with narcolepsy.

The exact term for the condition they think I have is "narcolepsy without cataplexy." Cataplexy is the symptom that you always see in the movies where someone narcoleptic can just fall asleep without warning. That is not what happens with me.

The doc explained how when a person's body is physically exhausted, a gland in the brain releases a hormone to induce sleepiness. My problem is that this gland does not know when to shut the fuck up. Even when I'm physically rested, my brain is sending signals to my body to make it sleepy.

Went back to the original neurologist and went over the results with him. He seems to think that this daytime sleepiness may be the cause of the irritability and maybe possibly also the migraines, we still don't know about that. However, I'm already on Topamax for the migraines, which seems to help, so the priority was to get me on something that will help increase my alertness throughout the early part of the day so that I can do better in my morning classes.

The solution is an enforced sleep schedule of midnight to 8 to try and get my brain onto a sleepiness pattern, as well as a medication to help me wake up in the morning.

Provigil is what they call it. Seems to work pretty well, too. I pop a pill in the morning as soon as I wake up, and it kicks in after about an hour. It's really helping. Problem is, it doesn't last long, so I experience a massive crash at about 2 or 3 in the afternoon. But that doesn't last because I've always naturally become more active starting around 6 in the evening, so I can deal with it.

So far, it looks like things are improving. I haven't had a migraine in several weeks, my general mood is better, I have more energy and inclination to exercise, and I'm having a much easier time paying attention and staying awake in class.

Dray, I just read this whole thread right before you posted the update and I just want to add that sleep deprivation (as you stated you had little sleep during all this) can cause soooo many problems to include hallucinations and psychosis.

As for the migraines, I can say my daughter went through many meds trying to rid her of what they kept calling migraines (although she actually lacked the headache, she had many of the other symptoms) and when we got to Topamax we sought out a different route. Topamax (dopamax is what we called it) made her absent-minded, tired and left her in a daze as well as completely unable to write or draw (she's very artistically inclined).

We finally, out of desperation, sought the help of a chiropractor (a very reputable one referred by many M.D.s).

The initial x-rays showed that her top cervical (up at the base of her head) vertebra was extremely misaligned, in fact you could feel her bone if you placed your fingers along that side of her neck. Once she started receiving adjustments the problems completely disappeared. She had what she calls "pinkouts" where all of a sudden everything she sees seems to look as though she is looking through a pink lens. These never returned after her first adjustment.

Now, insurance companies can be a bitch about chiropractic care and they are NOT cheap. If you can afford the first couple of months, that's when they fix the problem, you only have to visit like once every 3 months and a simple adjustment isn't that bad - not compared to the initial consultation and x-rays.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention this as something you might consider as it's a fairly safe alternative - especially if it works. And, if nothing else, you'll probably have no more back pain you didn't even realize you had had lol. ;)

Sounds good man! I just read through this whole thread...and that's quite an ordeal you've been going through.

Hope things continue to get better for ya man!

How did so many of us miss this thread before? Sorry to hear about your recent trouble. I'm really glad you're doing better on the meds, and I hope it keeps working for you. Good luck!

:yeahthat:

She might be onto something. The symptoms of misalignment's of the 1C
cervical vertebrae are headache's, migraines, high blood pressure, nervousness, chronic insomnia, amnesia, dizziness, and chronic tiredness and is severely undiagnosed in patients http://backdoc4u.com/spineanim.html.

I don't know you much but I wish you the best of luck

Jeeze Goonie, how did I miss this thread? That stuff sounds terrible. I don't think any less of you for your past, it makes you who you are, and I understand where you're coming from probably a bit better than you would think I do.

I'm glad to hear you're getting better. Best of luck, and keep us posted.

wtf, where where(sp?) we when this was written?! :O
You've been through alot. these are the tips I've gotten with my migraine:
-keep a migraine diary
-are there food/smells that gives you migraines?
-what helps your migraine medicine/cold towel
-If you had it all your life, you shouldnt worry. I had to get an MRI, then a paper that I might, have something there and I should get an MRI next year also.

I am currently on a everyday medicine, but it's makes me aggressive, and I am not an aggressive person but I've been close to hitting people. So..look at all possible options. massage is great for migraines, but the first ones can give you migraine(because of the relaxing=migraine) Are you getting an aura before the migraine, or does it just happen?

Hope you are feeling better, are going to feel better :hug2:
