I found a warren or a hole or something in my garden under the compost heap.

Any idea on the animal? There is a hole the size of a tennis ball at the bottom of the compost bin leading underneath. There is a pile of debris next to the hole that seems to be comprised of small balls of dirt about the size of a marble. I was wondering if anyone had an idea about what animal it could be. I live down the bottom of the east coast of Australia. I'm thinking rat but the pile of dirt is a little big, about the size of 2 or 3 basketballs. Any ideas?
 
maybe its a beetle....you know....the one that eats poop O-o
