this? I have moved the bird food that suspended on a huge high line, and my composter has never attracted them.I only put garden stuff in it,no cooked etc.

I would never harm any animal,as im a veggie, and believe animals have as much right to be there as we do,but i must admit rats scare the doo doo out of me.

No nasty exterminating answers please,as im not interested in hurting anything

If you don't do it already, buy a wheelie bin to store your kitchen/household bin bags.

That worked for us.

Try and work out where it is nesting (under a shed perhaps) and disturb the nest so it (and all its friends and relations) will move on. You could borrow a cat so that the scent may be enough to make them take off.

I realise this is displacing the problem but you need to be aware that Weils Disease and other parasites that rats carry are a danger to human health. |You are supposed to inform the council if you have a rat infestation, although I think this may only apply to rats within your house or flat (shades of UB40).

They do need a source of drinking water - are there any containers that they may be drinking from, that you could get rid of?

Get a cat to go kill it.
Especially males, my male cat bought home someone's guinea pig, but obviously dead now, before !!!!
They'll go for anything.

You're never far from a rat. The reason you don't see them every day is that they are frightened of humans and tend to keep out of sight. Provided you don't come into contact with their urine, they are harmless. If you don't want to hurt them, just leave them alone.
