I forget how to play a VCR tape?

i wanna watch a tape and i put it in the VCR and its not working. its not the tape cause every single tape i put in, it doesnt work. its on channel 3. i pu tthe tape in and i see the little screen on the VCR wiith the timing and its going by as if it was playing. but the tv screen doesnt change. its just normal television channel 3. am i forgetting something else i have to do?
 
Is it a newer TV? Check your remote control for modes of play. Switching between AV and S-VIDEO may solve.
 
How is the VCR cabled to the TV?

If a single coax cable, then channel 3 is the normal channel for TV to be set to, but could also be channel 4 depending on the switch on the VCR.

If by a set of RCA cables - yellow, white, and perhaps red, then your TV needs to be set to the aux input - perhaps on channel 0 or 00.
