...independent student by FAFSA.? According to FAFSA question 54:

Do you have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30,2010?

Answering yes to this question classifies you as an independent. Now according to my school, they are saying my Fiance cannot be considered my dependent because he was not on my taxes for the 2008 year. However FAFSA states nothing about having them on your taxes for the previous year just that you must be providing at least half of their support through 2010. Can someone please let me know if the school has the right to say that I am not an independent and to require I change my dependency status to Dependent and provide parental information. I really need help with this. Also, if they do not have the right to do this, what steps should I take to prove he is my dependent. He is on my lease, he is on my foodstamps, everything. He does not work, he only goes to college. Please any advice is welcome.
Ok also you should know he is considered INDEPENDENT because he was a ward of the state until he was 18
