I feel weird asking my best friend for a ride. (DETAILS)?

I'm 18, and I have very few friends. I blew off middle school my mother took me out of public school after 8th grade. I did correspondence courses, but now I'm with an online program. I volunteer at church, but that's all I have. I'm working on my low self esteem, so I need to try and go out and at least have a life. However, I live in a town where you need a car if you want to do anything including getting a job, but in my state, if you're a minor and you do your schooling online, you're not allowed to drive. I just got my learner permit a few weeks ago, and it'll be a while before I get my license.

I thought I might ask my best friend if I could hang out with her and her friends, but I'd have to ask her for a ride there and home. She's been a great friend, and for once I'd like to hang out with her, but it feels like I'd be inviting myself or tagging along. Plus I'd probably have to explain to her friends how stupid I was and why I can't drive yet.

Why does the idea of asking her to pick me up and meet her friends feel strange, and what do I do?

She does know about my situation.

Please, no rude answers.
Thanks.
