I am suddenly germaphobic. I never used to be and now I am washing my hands at least twenty times a day. I disinfect my steering wheel before I drive my car, I disinfect every door knob and light switch every day. When in public, I try to open doors in unconventional ways, like prying it open rather than using the handle because I figure the germ concentration is less on the door than on the handle. I could give you 40 more examples, but I'll spare you.
I am an intelligent person, I am aware that my methods are not rational. I also know that for everything that I disinfect, there are a number of other things that are filthy. I KNOW that these rituals are not keeping me from being exposed to all the other germs out there.
The other weird part is that I wasn't like this at all until I started nursing school this fall and have not only h1n1 on my mind, but just the flu in general. There's too much hype! I used to be normal! Will I ever get my old self back?!
