I feel like A bias is being held against me.

Alright, time for an odd yet true statement. I don't wear shoes. Don't worry, this will be pertinent in a second.

For the reason, click this spoiler.
I originally stopped wearing shoes right before Gustav. The reason was my shoes broke and I needed to go to class. I decided to go barefoot, and liked it ever since.

Since that time, shoes literally hurt my feet and I only wear them for work, which I ache all day because of.

Michael Dettinger, head of the Foreign Language Lab at LSU, "asked" (Read: commanded) that I must wear shoes to go into the language lab. I politely asked why, more out of curiosity than to confront. He apparently took it as me being snooty because he snapped at me stating this was in the rules. I stated cooly when he can show it to me in the rules, I shall peacefully comply.

I walked into the language lab and started working on my homework. He stormed in a few minutes later stating it was policy and that he doesn't have to have it showing then stormed off.

For this, I emailed the head of the Foreign Languages Department and she agreed, but said he does have the right to present a policy so long as it is written.

I feel like the policy was written solely because of me and thus feel like my rights have been encroached upon. Do I have a right to be angry? Can I get the policy turned down?

I feel victimized, and am pissed because of it. I type nothing further because I don't want to incriminate myself should something actually happen to him.

I like how you added the "show spoiler" icon, and above it, let us know to click on said spoiler. Before that, I was having a pretty rough go at it. It's a good thing that your reason wasn't just thrown will-nilly in with the rest of the easily-seen text.

You are an adult in a post-industrial Western society. Put on some fucking shoes.

I love being barefoot too! I have a really hard time even having socks on

I am sorry, I have no idea what you could do.. ..or well, I use mostly flipflops summertime if there is a reason I can't walk barefoot.. Hope it all clears out nice :hug2:

I tend to agree with Jack.

He may just feel that it's unprofessional to not wear shoes in a setting like the language lab. While you're not there as a profession you're supposed to be studying for your professional life.

Additionally there are safety concerns... say you step on a staple... you might sue.

Additionally, by not wearing shoes in public settings you expose yourself to health risks. I assume you use the bathroom right? I assume you've seen what a men's room floor looks like right? So you'd likely be standing in piss at the very least.

And maybe you have ugly feet. Or he has a foot fetish and can't concentrate with your peds hanging out all naked and stuff.

At the end of the day it's his lab, his rules. Play by them or don't use the lab.

I have to wear uncomfortable steel-toe boots as a condition of employment. I don't show up one day with them, I'll be out looking for a new job.

it sucks, but that's how life is. Sometimes you have to defer and do things you don't like.

Maybe you can have a pair of sandals in your bag, and only wear them in Language class?

Kich, why do you wear uncomfortable steel toed boots? I had a pair of steel toes that I wore for over two years, and even after the inner soles wore out so there were holes in the heels, they were still quite comfortable! They were RedWings steel-toed workboots. *This is not a RedWings advertisement. It is a simple statement from a satisfied customer.*

Avvy, a few of the others do bring up some serious health and safety issues. I would say to either find something you can wear at least during that class, as someone else recommended, or spend some of that goddamn money (which most of us don't have) and buy some footwear that doesn't hurt your feet.

I'm an adult in a world with various freedoms and choices. I have a right not to wear shoes and should not be discriminated against. Excluding working environments, I see no reason to start wearing shoes. How's about you stop being a hyper-judgmental bastard and present a logical and solid reason for me to not be barefoot?

This argument isn't a valid one. I do wear shoes during work only because I must and my feet hurt the entire time. I've tried different kinds of shoes and they all cause notable discomfort.

I don't wear shoes to class or to the labs because I see no reason to do so. My not wearing shoes is not disruptive to anyone's learning environment, ergo, there is no logic to prohibit my being barefoot.

I wouldn't sue over a staple. As Jack stated, I am an adult and therefore should be aware that if I step on a staple, I was aware of the consequences while walking around barefoot. Not only would I perceive such a lawsuit frivolous but also fruitless.

I rarely if ever use public restrooms, they were too gross for me even when I wore shoes. Furthermore, if that's an argument, then people should have to wear sanitary gloves everywhere too. Doorknobs hold more germs than most areas deemed unsanitary.

Unless he can see about 20 feet away around a ninety degree angle or through walls, he can't really see my feet. The desks cover almost all sides, thereby hiding my feet.

Also, ugly people walk around constantly. I see no reason to force them to wear bags over their heads.

It's is not his lab. It is the school's lab, though he is a tiny enough prick to try to treat it as his lab. If this were a private organization, I'd just never go back. I need to go there, however, to do mandatory school work and this prick is obstructing my ability to do so.

I already have a job and comply to wearing shoes for professionalism's sake. At a language lab, though, I fail to see how bare feet have any incondusive affects on my environment when the guy next to me usually has seven piercings and a purple Mohawk. Shouldn't he be banned for not being professional as well by y'all's argument?

I don't have money. I have self-sustainability and some educationally beneficial connections at a community college.

As stated before, by the arguments above, persons wearing facial piercings or expressive hairstyles or tattoos or "unprofessional clothing" should also be banned from the site.

Sanitation isn't nearly as hard to tackle. You collect more germs on your hands as carried by other persons than your feet. Ever done a petri-dish on doorknobs, desk tables, water-faucet mouths, garbage cans, etc.? Your hands ouch much more volatile areas than your feet.

The point is he made this policy solely to stop me from using the lab. Due to the fact y'all can't seem to stop obsessing over bare feet, you fail to see the real issue: This bastard has made a rule directly cause by and in bias against a student who has done nothing wrong.

P.S. rub, I never said I was "against" shoes. I said I don't like to wear them. Big difference.

I've got a brilliant idea! real/henna tattoo shoes to your feet! problem solved and he couldnt really argue with it because he didn't state what kind of shoes :D

Well, I have insoles in them that make them more comfortable, but they wear out quickly and I can't afford another pair right now.

Besides, Nothing's comfortable after I've hit that 10th hour of being on my feet.

I'm working on affording a pair of Red Wings, right now I'm wearing Carhartts.

No you don't. You do not have any such right. It's LONG been held that public places can require a certain level of attire for admittance. Don't start off on "rights" because in this case you have none.

Look around at how many people WOULD sue over a staple. They can't treat you differently because you say you won't. Soon everyone wants to go barefoot and they're facing a rash of lawsuits... Look at how this country works man!

And yet people can wash their hands in the sink. I suppose you could wash your feet but as soon as you're done you put them right back down on the ground and poof, insta dirty! When you're done washing your hands you can use a paper towel to open the door and your hands are still clean.

Dunno, we could argue that one for a while I think.

Is he responsible for running the lab? If so, it's HIS lab. His responsibility, his lab.

Ever done a petri dish UNDER those areas? Your hands touch more volatile areas because your feet are usually not touching anything at all.

No, he made the policy to make you wear shoes in the lab.

Stop playing the pity card. This "poor me oh my" act is just lame. You want to play hippie and someone said NO. Now you're throwing a temper tantrum at bitching about rights you don't have and claiming persecution where there is none. Stupid rules tend to be made after stupid people do stupid things. It's not persecution, it's a response to a stupid situation. It's only persecution if they only enforce the rules on YOU.

As jack said: You're an adult in a post modern industrial society. Put some fucking shoes on.

No shoes, No Shirt, No service.

I'm a flip flop guy, so I feel your pain mostly, though I don't like barefoot over rough terrain, and there's a lot of that up here. More power to you.

Still, you break the norm, you get singled out. I'm surprised that You're surprised. :happysad:
