I drive a '99 Ford Expedition 5.4L Triton V8...does it tax the engine when I run the AC?

I've always thought that conventional wisdom said that if you run the Air Conditioning in your automobile, you're going to burn more gas. But I was driving with a friend the other day and I had the windows down and he told me that with a truck my size (1999 Ford Expedition AWD, 5.4 Liter Triton V8) it doesn't matter whether or not I run the A/C. I didn't buy it but he's a grease monkey so I figured I'd ask. Thanks for the answers.

First, always run a/c on max. 2nd, compressor is light, easy to turn, not much drag on engine, though windows down is more drag than compressor

grease monkey is a real old name for a back yard wrench when you run defrosters the air works to remove moister from air so you do not pump "ice"back on inside of windshield when you run that do you find your self using more fuel .the 134a uses more horse than the old 12 freaon more pressure than old type trying to fall back to 12 you would find your self replacing everything your monkey probly knows how to check out stuff and on this one he is right climet control is nicer and uses more fuel
