I don't want to go to the stupid 8th grade dance or prom now everyone thinks I'm weird?

I'm gonna be in 8th grade this year, and they always have a dance where everyone dresses up and stuff. I don't want to go to a place where everyone pretends to like each other, and they are dressed in materialistic things for one night, pretending their lives are perfect. Same with prom. Your gonna spend hundreds of dollars on shoes and hair and makeup and the dress, but for what? You could spend all of that money on a nice vacation that'll actually mean something in the long run. If you must know, I'm kind of a tomboy, and most of my friends are guys, and I'm 13. Is it bad because I feel that way?
 
I think you should just go with the attitude of having the most fun, dance cos the adrenaline will make you happy, just go and enjoy yourself, you don't have to dress in a particular way. I always have to force myself to have fun if I don't want to go to something like that, and it always works! Just make sure you and some close friends have a good time :)
