I don't understand your appeal... (Actor Edition)

Is there a leading man or lady that is showered with praise to the point where you question what your fellow citizens are smoking?

Julia Roberts has always mystified me...
I don't think she is a bad actress; in fact I own a copy of "Closer" on dvd. And she was good in "Oceans 11" (playing herself).
But I don't understand why so many Americans (and I'm American) think that she's great.
Her looks don't do it for me. Her mere presence in a film can be grating at times. ("Mary Reily")
Yet so many people seem to like her.

John Cusack
"Better Off Dead" was kind of fun...
But I just don't get it.
He looks like he just came from a blood-letting...
And the film adaptation of "Hight Fidelity," every time he spoke to the camera I wanted to strangle him.

Zach Braff
He just woke up... from his job at the record store.
Have you ever watched "Scrubs?" -It's about as funny as Spinal Tap... the procedure.
And he gets to lock lips with Natalie Portman?

Actors that others continually praise, (and who I simply can't stand) include Richard Gere, Sean Connery and Clint Eastwood.

-------------------------------------

On a side note, I couldn't disagree with you more regarding John Cusack - he's one of the best actors of his generation. I've never seen him give a bad performance - and when he's on top form (like in Grosse Point Blank) he's simply amazing.

Personally, I think Zach Braff is a stunning comedic actor and is proving to be a talented Director as well. How anyone can not love Scrubs is beyond me, but we all have our own opinions.

I don't think he's a bad actor, but his mannerisms and facial expressions put me off. But I've met a fair number of people who are over the moon with him. Again, I don't think he's bad, I just don't get him.

Richard Gere... no thanks.

Jennifer Lopez I have one word for you, Gigli *shudder*

Liam Neeson I dont know why but I really don't like him and I don't think he's a good actor, he's got no real screen presence and he's not convincing

Keira Knightley One step away from being a man, cant act IMO, and has all the warmth of a lump of rock

Catherine Zeta Jones - still unable to decide if she's American or Welsh (as per her accent) and don't even get me started on her hammy acting!

Brian Dennehy - makes my skin crawl with his sheer sliminess.

Brad Pitt - what will you do when your looks fade? hopefully you've got a second career in mind to fall back on (ditto that with his missus)

Zach Braff - he just makes me shrug. I dont get him.

Jennifer Love Hewitt - see above

I know there's loaRAB more but I wouldnt want people to think I disliked everyone. :o

Helena Bonham-Carter - gave her best performance when dressed as an ape - otherwise she is as animated and convincing as my cat's stuffed toy mouse

Tom Cruise - he's not sexy, he's not tall, he's not a good actor

Orlando Bloom - I'm gonna knock, knock, knock on his wooden acting style

The only thing I've really liked Jim Carrey in is "The Truman Show" which I think suited him. Other than that I'm not keen.

And aliasjones I know what your daughter means, Orlando Bloom is quite easy on the eye:) it's just when he starts to act it all goes a bit awry!

Sorry - can't agree with you on Helena. I don't mind her eccentricty it's the fact she's ruined a number of good films for me. And as to what she'll be like as Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd". Mmm.. I fear the worse.
And I like Tim Burton films.

Angelina Jolie - Wooden

Steven Segal - arghhhhh

Drew Barrymore - Wooden

Colin Farrel - crap

Catherine Zeta Jones - I just want to smash her face in

Gywneth Paltrow - as above
