I don't like British films

Case proven m'lud: most of these definitely suck!

Exceptions: Sexy Beast, The Krays and Dead Men's Shoes(which is only saved from suckdom by the terrifying Paddy Considine).

I don't 'get' most American films tbh, as I can't relate to their culture - it seems too alien to me. I often struggle with the dialogue and media references in Hollywood scripts too.

All my favourite films have an emotional resonace with me, and they tend to be British or European (I love Fr ench films).

I just can't resonate with the whole American thang.

I'm not singleing you out union but i think your post sums up what most british film haters in this thread think british film is all about.

When clearly it's not.

That is the blinkered view of many that dont seek out decent british film.

I can agree with the OP about the air of smugness certain films, like 'The Boat that Rocked', seem to have about them, but again, to debunk all british film because it isn't the popcorn escapism of american film is just ludicrous. It's like saying "i don't like chinese food" which many people say...a whole countries food, and you dont like any of it?

I've seen enough British films to know they aren't my cup of tea. There really isn't anything wrong with it. Just like there isn't anything wrong with people who dislike mainstream Hollywood. :)

Count me in too. Any British Romantic comedy leaves me cold especially if it has Hugh Grant in it who always plays the same stuttering English buffoon in nearly all of them.

Britian used to make great films including Comedy but I've yet to see a really good one that matches up to the great ones of the past.

British 'films' polevaulted over American 'movies' until the 80s kicked in. Though I suppose once you've started a decade with The Devils and ended it with Killer's Moon, there's no going back really.

LOL - I said some of my favourites. At no point was I using the list as the front face of British cinema.

'Case proven' - Which case? That some people like British films and other don't?

'most of these definitely suck' - In your opinion, of course. Thats not a fact.

The only thing that my post 'proved' is that I have poor taste, according to you.

If you want a movie debate though, I'm up for it. List some films you like, and we'll start from there....

Isn't that just because you're British, rather than because the characters and events in British films are really true-to-life?

I live in London but I've never met any gorblimey geezer did you bring the shooters Guy Ritchie style gangsters - they only exist in escapist films.

Not me I think there has been some great British film around better than america right now just look at Slum dog.Im sick of seeing america come over here with Scary Movie films over and over till it's not even funny anymore. They might not have the same glam as the American one's but they have more of real storyline to it.The only american movie I have loved this year so far was The Wrestler and Gran Torino, everything else that has came out of American this year has bored me.

It seems to me to be a bit of a nonsense to not like an entire country's output, when it's so diverse. It's like saying you don't like Americans when there's three hundred million of them. A sweeping generalisation of epic proportion.

And another problem you'd have is defining what exactly is a British film anyway? One with British actors in it? One made in the UK? One made with British money, but set overseas? It's not a clear matter by any means.

The UK has made many great classic films.

I think much of it comes down to the funding of British films. It's usually a bureaucrat who green-lights a film and said bureaucrat is likely more interested in the accounting and political-correctness of the film than if it's entertaining.

Collaborative British films, such as "Love Actually", the new Bond films ("Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace"), the Harry Potter franchise and such have more creative freedom which makes for better films.

When the Scots director Bill Douglas was trying to get Scottish funding to make his bleak, harrowing trilogy about life in a Scottish mining village, he was refused on the grounRAB that the films did not show a "forward-thinking" country.

The voice of reason.

I think the problem is that some people grew up watching 'Hollywood' movies, and find it hard to break the mold.

'How can a crappy low budget Brit flick compare to a 40 million dollar budget hollywood movie?'

Well I guess its just a case of broadening your horizons, and sometimes its just a matter of personal taste e.g Preferring to watch Americans over Brits

True, but they are the films which get the publicity here and abroad. You can't blame people for viewing British film in this respect.

When movies like 28 Days Later or Batman Begins are huge overseas I am actually proud, not a 'hater' as you put it. It's just those formulaic films that get the attention that makes me cringe.

You sound like a real barrel of laughs...:D

Can you feel the positivity?

So 'ironjade', if you're gonna attack my personal taste, at least list some movies that you 'think' are superior, so I can rip them to shreRAB....(or even worse, agree with you)
