Someone please help me on how long this shoud go on and what can i do to get better.

For a good 2 weeks i have been ill - It started off with such bad stomach pains, they would come on like contractions and build up so painfully i really felt my stomach or bowel was splitting open. My stomach swelled up massively and it was burning hot. I felt so sick. I spent 4 days with no food intake at all, but then i could not even sip water, one sip and my stomach was burning inside and the pain was making me want to faint. I had a terrible urge to go to the toilet as i felt i had diarrheoa, but nothing would happen! For just one day only i had diarhhea.
I went to my doctor on day 9 who said he felt i may have Diverticulitis - and it is a flare up!! He gave me 2 different lots of anti biotics and said if it is Diverticulitis this would clear it up. Well it did, 2 days later i felt great, and i had a small bit of dry food and one glass of soft drink and went straight back to square one. I am feeling so sick,my belly is so very very uncomfortable.
I am sleeping non stop and cannot stay awake. My belly is making really loud noises, i have no appetite at all.
I went back to the Dr last night, and he was a stand in Dr who didnt really know me . He has given me an anti sickness tablet and an ant acid tablet.
But i am still sitting here, really bad belly, no appetite, if i do eat i just want to sick it back up. I am really white in colour, i dont want to walk or talk, it is just too much for me. I am exhausted and wiped out.
The Dr said go back in a week, but i feel so bad like im dying. How long does this go on for, what should i do! I have a disgusting taste in my mouth as well that makes me want to be sick. Its like a metal taste.
I posted on here as my dr said this is a bowel and a stomach problem, so didnt know what board to post on.
Can anyone advise me please.

HI, here's an update. Dr sent me to see a consultant, who at the begining of the meeting said i had Diverticulitus, but when i told him i had suffered with IBS for years, he changed his mind and said it was just a flare up of IBS. He has sent me for a CT scan of the pelvic area and i am just waitng on the results. I know for sure that this was not an IBS flare up, this was totally different than normal. I will just have to wait and see what happens, but at least it has all cleared up now., I hope it stays away.

sorry you are suffering like you are but if it is diverticulitis, there is surgery to cut the infected part of the colon out and you will feel much better.

You have to stay away from seeds and seed related food such as tomatoes, nuts, severe ruffage, etc.

Good luck.

I would be calling 911 for an ambulance or you can get a friend to drive you to the hospital but it is at a hospital I'd go and forget the bull of doctor and doctor appointments.

hi willow. i just wanted to mention to you, about that metallic taste you mentioned among other things here? have they actually done ANY bloodwork on your kidney and liver functions at all during all of these doc appts? this would just check overall functions. the one thing i needed to mention was just given the fact that you DO have those cysts within the spinal area at all, there just could be a big possibility that these could also show up within certain abdominal organs as well, like the kidneys themselves? the most common area actually and considering their close proximity to the actual spinal column(they both sit very close to that column, one on each side) they could 'migrate" out into the abdominal organs. hopefully if something is going on with further cystic development, it will show up on that CT you had done too.

just one other really great test to have done when you are having the symptoms you have with this GI stuff would be to actually have an ultrasound done too. this just can obtain all bloodflow to and thru organs and other stuff within the organs themselves that scans like a CT would not be able to do for you. i have to have an US done once a year for my polycystic kidney disease that has also impacted other organs witnin my abdominal area. just a thought for you. there just could be a very real connection here between the current GI problems you are having and the cysts that were found along that spinal column in the nerve endings too. it just needs some really in depth looking into at this point. like i mentioned to you in your other post, that full spinal MRI REALLY IS an important thing for you to just get right now to just really 'see' what else could be going on further up that did not get scanned when the other cystic formations were found. marcia

Are you running a fever? If your temperature goes above 100, you need to get immediate medical attention (straight to the ER; forget calling your doctor).

Your own doctor said come back in a week or the stand-in doctor? If it was not your own doctor, talk with his staff about it. Even with the stand-in, remind them how long this has been going on. Two weeks is a little long for a bout of diverticulitis . . . and you are continuing on a course of antibiotics?

Surgery was mentioned earlier . . . that normally is not done right away . . . usually one attempts dietary changes. And there are new thoughts on dietary changes rather than the advise to avoid nuts, seeds, etc.

I got my results of the CT scan, all looked normal apart from a bulkyness in an area i cannot remember now, but he said it was probably a fibroid, but otherwise all was fine, for which i am truly thankful. I am not getting any probs with the fibroid, I.E. bad periods etc so i am going to leave well alone. I still have the evey day to day probs with ibs,i.e. rushing to the loo urgently ,swollen belly etc but i will have to cope with that, im just grateful nothing bad showed up on the ct scan.

Thank you for the reply. I know nothing of Diverticulitis and have not been confirmed as having it. But is this what happens to someone with Diverticulitis, do they have this terribly uncomfortable belly that goes on and on. Is this constant wanting to be sick park of it. And this totally washed out feeling and exhaustion. I am frightened that i might have just a normal stomach bug and i am going over the top, but just how long does this go on for.

Sorry . . . so you basically have not eaten for about two weeks? Can you keep down anything liquid? Juice? Soups? (Stress this when talking with the doctor's office; after two weeks you would be suffering malnutrition on top of anything else.)

Just over one year on and it's back again, i am suffering from what i'm gathering IBS all year round. But now this real bad belly/bowel thing has started up again.
I am burning hot, but not all the time, it's sort of like a fever that keeps coming and going. I feel very sick, but have not actually been sick. My belly is very uncomfortable from just underneath my breasts, right down to the very bottome of my belly. I keep getting what i can only describe as sort of like mini contactions!! Low donw, and on each side but very low down, i haven't got a clue what this could be. I feel very unwell indeed but find it very hard to explain, and i feel so very tired and exhausted. This is so badly effecting my life as i cant do anything, i don't feel well enough to go to work, to do any housework or go shopping. i just want to sit and sleep. I hate living like this, i wish it would stop.
I'm very tempted to try and see if i can get an emergency appointment at my Dr's tomorrow (but i don't think they are open on a Saturday) all i know is this cant go on.

Hi Guys, Thank you for your replies. This is week 3 of this bad stomach, but i am feeling better, but no way near back to normal. Ihave been living on basically 2 bits of toast a day. I went back to the Dr today, (my normal Dr), he is sending me for an urgent Barium Thing! He still reckons it is diverticulitis! He has not told me what i should stop eating, and what i should eat more of. I am soooo scared of this triggering off again, as in the last 3 weeks this has happened 3 times. What should i eat/not eat!
What does it mean if i have got Diverticulitis! Just HOW painful is this Barium thing,as i have a very sore Butt.

One more thing: for 3 days of the last week, i was almost out of it, i could not stay awake for more than a few minutes,i was hot, and i saw a spider on my ceiling ( it was actually a nail) but i can hardly remember this last week, is this what happens, as i didnt know what to do, at one stage i got frightened and wanted to go to hospital, but this stand in Dr didnt feel i needed to!!
Thank you so much for all your advice.

UPDATE!!
Well i have been back to see my G.P who says i have Diverticulitis and wants me to have another colonoscopy, i dont want this done. But when i went back to my Dr's i had to see a different G.P. and she said that as i had a normal result on my lasp colonoscopy in 2005, i would not have got Diverticulitis by now! She said i didnt need another colonoscopy. I have now had an appointment with a Consultant at the hospital, who at first said it was Diverticulitis, then as he read my notes and realised i had suffered for many years with IBS symptoms, he then went on to say it was actually IBS. He agreed i did not need another Colonoscopy, but is sending me for a CT scan!
If it is Diverticulitis, will this show up on a CT scan, if by any chance there was any sign of cancer, would this also show up.

I have been well since that last big flare up thing! But am having to go to the toilet at least 3 times a day, and i have to run or i will have an accident, my stomach still swells up and is uncomfortable, but nothing at all like i had in April.

Willow-I was recently diagnosed with diverticulitis. Ended up in hospital for 5 days with a drain tube-I had a 3 cm abscess. Am awaiting surgery now June 8th. Can't wait to get it over with.
I hope you can get the answers you need. Maybe another opinion? I do know that I took Metrop. also and Flagyl while in the hospital for several days-I think 2 weeks. I got that awful taste in my mouth too so that's a common side effect from what I'm told. I know after I stopped the meds, I felt more like myself in a few days. The taste went away quickly. I took mine in a spoonful of applesauce so it helped some. I also chewed mint gum the last few days and that helped alot.
I hope you get some relief soon. I will send some healing hugs and prayers your way.
Keepin' the faith...Dawn

hi,

definatly does not sound like diverticulitis, that is bothersome but not to the degree you are saying, IBS is however very bothersome, and what you could be experiencing is partial blockages which would be very painful adn cause your belly to swell, i know you dont want another one but i would demand my doctor to do both both a ct scan of the abdomen adn pelvis, and another colonoscopy, even though the last one was fine it could show the area that is now having problems becasue the area would be aggravated, scopes are normally used for checking for possible cancers but they can also show and areas that are having unnessary strain. I would also demand a complete blood workup, it could be as simple as a specific vitamin deficiency bothering your bowels!!! The scope, yes it sucks but they at least give you good happy juice to relax you adn half an hour of a camera in you is much better then living in agony :) Good Luck

Just a quick update - i have seen a different doctor at my practice and she did notfeel i needed to have another camera thing as i had a clear one 4 yrs ago. I have seen a consultant now and at first he said i had Diverticulitis, but when i told him i had had IBS for many years now he changed his mind and said it wasnt diverticulitits, it was a bad flare up of irritable bowel!! Anyway he has sent me for a CT scan of the abdoment area, and i will get my results on 9th September. I am much better and i never want to go through that again, it was nothing at all like IBS, but the consultant did say i could have had a bad bout of food poisening.

A metallic taste is a definite side effect of Flagyl. You need to watch your diet very closely and head back to your doctor. Treatment for a flareup of diverticulitis is very intensive.

Willow it's been a long time since I've been on here but I read your post and it sounds to me that it might be very possible you have diverticulitis. A year ago I had the fever and was very unwell for a week and thought the pains coming and going in my abdomen were from a stomach virus. I ended up in the ER after a week and after a CT scan it was discovered I had diverticulitis with an abscess! Very painful. I had to be admitted and stayed in the hospital 5 days with IV antibiotics. Dr. said the abscess was stage 3 of 4 which meant that if it had gone to stage 4 I would have ended up with a colostomy bag along with the surgery. It had just started to perforate my intestines and if it had the poison from the infection would have gone thru my whole body and I would have been in very bad shape.
Not trying to scare you, but I would go to the ER and have it checked just to be sure this is not what's going on. It is not anything to mess around with. Good luck. I hope you feel better soon!
Sending healing thoughts and prayers your way....keepin' the faith...Dawn
