I can't recognize people.

Up until recently, I just figured I suck at remembering people, but recently I've started to suspect that something more serious is up.

I can't recognize people. At all. I can't tell two people apart if I look away for more than a few seconds, I couldn't tell you which one was which. Aside from voice and body shape - I cannot differentiate from people after I look away from them for even a short amount of time. Before, this was only slightly problematic as I didn't socialize much and was on hiatus from a semi-slow customer service job, but it's starting to become a real problem.

What's wrong with me?

after an adult (late 30's) bout of mono that turned into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, I lost the ability to remember names for faces. I may recognize a face or I may not and if I did recognize a face of a vendor, 9 times out of 10, I would not remember their names at all.

I use to be very good at remembering things. I was always good a remembering a phone number but now when I get a new number to know, I have to write it and repeat it numerous times before it sinks in and is remembered.

Go to a neurologist and have a check up. It may be a minor thing.
Are there other symtoms than this? If there are more things you are forgetting and its recent stuff -- then you could be losing your short-term memory

Get a check up. Don't be scared. its probably nothing.

I don't have insurance and can't afford any health care, so I'm having to ask here. And no, there's nothing else. Just people. I've been this way for a while, I just always thought I was lousy with remembering people. I doubt I'm losing my memory, I'm only 23. No other symptoms, it just is... severely bothersome.

DesperationGirl,

Whoa...Wait a minute...I must disagree with esfera, respectfully.

Lets go back and listen to our young friend DesperationGirl, who is seeking support first of all, and advice, second. This is not an emergency, but rather something to address calmly, and thoughtfully. Freaking out, and acting in haste never has a positive outcome.

Of course, we understand that for a 23 year old, that does not have access to medical insurance, an immediate appointment with a neurologist is a daunting task....if not impossible.

Do you have a family doctor, or have parents who could afford you to have a check up with a doctor? Most cities have free medical services for low income, or un-insured people needing medical care.

The first step is to get into a basic doctor visit, in which you address your concerns with your recognition of people. From there your doctor will refer you to the proper doctor to help you with your issue. Payment for these services can be worked out as you go, and doctors commonly accept payment over time for services you need.

Take one step at a time, and seek the medical services you need. Your health care will be your responsibility the rest of your adult life, so getting this going is a necessary step in every young adults life. The investment in your own health is a big, but necessary step in your journey through life. You certainly want to get this aspect of your life in order sooner, rather than later.

I wish you the best!

There is a condition called prosopragnosia or face blindness. Look it up and see if it fits with your symptoms. There are 2 kinds. One is developmental and you would have had it from early childhood. The other is caused from a head trauma.
