I can't call or anything on my old vodaphone handset?

my grandad gave me quite an old vodaphone handset with a vodaphone sim card and i put it in and everything went fine, until i tried to send a text/ call the free top up service. It just says 'rejected' and i have no idea what to do!
please help!!
