I can't activate my Virgin Mobile phone?

I just bought the Kyocera X-tc, brought it home, and tried to activate it on the Virgin Mobile website. However, after following all the steps (including putting in my personal and credit card information, selecting a plan, the phone's serial number, etc., etc.), the phone told me that it could not connect to the service. When I called the troubleshooting number it supplied, I got an automated recording informing me that Virgin was currently not operating (business hours ended at like 6 p.m. or something). I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong, or if you just can't activate a Virgin phone outside of business hours?
