I bought a usb to 3.5mm headphone adapter for motorola krzr k1, but it won't work?

I recently purchased a headphone adapter for my phone so I can listen to music via my headphones. The adapter goes into the usb port, and on the other end goes in the headphones. Why is it when I try to listen to music on the phone, it keeps going through the phone speakers, and not to my headphones? I already tried changing the settings, but I don't see anything that says listen via headphones. Please help.
