Its a red betta fish i think its a male but im not sure and it keeps staying at the bottom of the tank or top and it doesnt swim very much

They're not a very active fish, they spend a lot of their time moving slow and calm or resting on the floor or broad leafed plants.
Chances are though, that he's cold. Get his temp up to around 78-80, this is the best range for them, they are a tropical fish after all. Betta can TOLERATE being cold, but they don't WANT to be cold, and just like us, being too cold for too long can lead tot a whole host of health issues. Most pet stores will sell a small 14 dollar heating pad that should do the trick, it's slim and can be placed against a wall or under the gravel.
Best of Luck!

betas often just sit on the bottom but it might be adjusting to the shock of transporting it to your tank

If it is a boy it will have long flowing fins and tail. Their water temperature should be 72-80 degrees F. their ph level is 7.0. they are not that active and will swim slowly and steadily. if it does not eat in a day or 2 than you should do some research. They also need a 2 or more gallon tank.
