I am 16 years old. This is my first car ever, and I was desperate. I bought a silver 1997 ford taurus from friends of the family for $500. They sold it because they are leaving the country forever.. I need it for college and everything. Apparently it just got a tune up? dont know what that means.. and the oil was changed.

So. how much longer will this last me? thank you!

I don't know of many taurus ,that has that many miles on them and the head gasket has'nt blown, so i would say that it has a new head gasket ,if it has'nt had a head gasket replace it would be a surprize to me. You got a good deal ,but be sure to keep a eye on the engine and don't let it run hot. They are known for having head gasket troble.

depends. it could last you another hundred thousand or another hundred. i've seen these cars go as far as three hundred thousand. just expect to put couple bucks into it now and then. a three hundred dollar repair here and there is still cheaper than a car payment every month. i drive a 96 beretta with over two hundred thousand and it's been a great car. i plan on driving it another hundred thousand. i wouldn't have a problem spending 500 on a vehicle like that. good luck kid.

You did fine. 500 bucks for a running car is a good deal. Don't listen to all the jackholes here who say you got a lemon or that it will blow a gasket. Frankly, it would have already done all that stuff long ago if it was the piece of sh!t that people here think it is. A tuneup on a car like that means new spark plugs, perhaps new spark plug wires, maybe an air filter, and cleaning of the fuel injectors, that's about it. Most everything else is computer controlled and can't be adjusted. Take care of it, baby it, don't drive like an idiot, make sure you change the oil once or twice a year, check the oil level once a week, it will last a while. It's hard to say how long, but I routinely drive Fords well over 200,000 miles.

97 FORD TAURUS IS BAD CAR,LOOK IN YOUTUBE,
HOWEVER IT CAME FROM SOME FAMILY FRIEND, 500 BUCKS IS A GOOD DEAL FOR THAT CAR, REMEMBER TO PERFORM A TUNE UP EVERY 3 MONTHS(50 TO 120 BUCKS) DON´T SPEED IT THIS CAR IT´S NOT MADE FOR THAT, BE PREPARED WITH AT LEAST ANOTHER $500 FOR FUTURE REPAIRS, BUY SOME OXIGEN SENSORS, TIRES, AND REMEMBER INSURANCE UNDER YOUR NAME, GOOD LUCK.

you should be good, for a while that is,almost all cars especially ford are designed to last for 300,000 miles before the main bearing wear, you should be good for a while,a Taurus was rated the number one family sedan in both reliability and comfort in 2002,the internal components didn't change much form 97-02

If you got a car for 500 bucks that runs and drives no problem and doesnt look like ass i say good for you ! 500 bucks would be worth it even if it lasted you 4 months. Ford motors have come along way. That car will prob run untill 250 300 K
