That's a pretty solid performance for the first time. Professional riders in a time trial would ride at about 25 - 35 mph for an hour. However, this is an all out effort. Most recreational riders ride at about 14 - 18 mph. So you are just above average for rec riders.Do you have the stuff to go pro? Maybe, maybe not, Give it a try. enter some races and see how you stack up.

Keep it in the big ring.

How competitive is that in the biking world? I've never biked in my life and just decided to go for a stroll. I was told that my miles for an hour was exceptional and since I aready do run my future was a triathelete..so I'm just curious as to where 20.4 miles in an hour on a bike (on relatively flat terrain) would be put.

If you weren't pushing yourself, that's pretty good. A performance like that in a local sprint triathlon would keep you up near the leaders with a good swim. but in order to really be competitive, you would need to sustain something closer to 25 mph, faster if you wish to enter a larger event.

Give yourself a little test: map out a 15K course (pretty typical for a sprint tri) get a good warm up, then ride it really hard, as fast as you can. If you do it in less than 25 minutes, you're really flying, and with a little training you'll be winning local events.

That's not bad for a beginner. If you are wanting to be a triathlete, consider this: I checked the race results for a good sized triathlon - the Hawaii IronMan 70.3. With only 1 exception, all of the top 20 finishers completed the 56 mile bike at an average speed in excess of 22 mph. The winner averaged nearly 25 mph. That was done of course after swimming 1.2 miles and then in anticipation of a 13.1 mile run after the bike ride. There are many shorter triathlons that most people start with like the "Sprint" or "Olympic" distances which are both shorter than the IronMan 70.3 and of course there is the full IronMan distance. That should give you an idea where you stand and what to shoot for!
