I am trying to take indoor action photos with my Nikon D50, but do not know

what settings to use (more below)? What settings should I be using for the following: f-stop, aperture, ISO? These are rodeos and the action is fast and random, so there is no time to focus or make corrections at the time. Many of the photos I take are in focus and bright enough, but some aren't and I have no idea why there is a difference between them.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!
