I am trying to record into the piano roll in FL Studio from my midi keyboard...but

it only records a few secs? I can get it to record a few notes but then it's like it runs out of time....if I increase the beats per bar to the max, then I get more time to record but it still runs out when I'm in the middle of playing. I just want it to record everything I play into the piano roll. How can I do this? Also, sometimes I hit play and the tic-toc goes for like a second or two, but other times it goes for like ten seconds even when I start playing and it just seams to stop randomly after I play a bunch of notes. I'm pretty frustrated, why can't I just hit play (with the delay until I hit a key) and it just record until I hit stop?
