am running into problems? I have tried (I think) 4 times to install Ubuntu.
I have a Macbook Pro with the following specs:
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
SMC Version: 1.16f8
I am running Leopard with all updates installed.
I am following this guide - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro - and I have been attempting to dual boot OSX and Ubuntu (Really Easy Installing Ubuntu alongside OS X (Dual Boot, no rEFIt). The steps I did were:
1. I used Boot Camp to make a 20 GB partition
2. I booted from Ubuntu 8.04 (I'm pretty sure it was the Intel version because I have an Intel Mac) on a DVDRW disk
3. I used a city in central time as my location and the default USA setup for an English keyboard
4. As in the guide, I selected manual and: wrote down the amount of megabytes in the partition like it said "22393 mb" See step 6-10 for more details
5. When I restarted and held the option key, only mac os x showed up and windows wasn't an option (using this method of installation, the linux option is supposed to be called windows)
6. I then booted into leopard and checked disk utility. The list looked like this:
/149.1 GB FUJITSU MHW2160BHPL Media
/disk0s1
/Macintosh HD
/disk0s3
/Linux Swap
'CD'HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N
With / being substituted for a picture of a hard drive and 'CD' as a picture of a cd (that probably didn't matter, but I don't want to miss anything)
7. I tried to erase these with disk utility, but all I could do was wipe them clean, so I left them there
8. I used boot camp to try to restore the disk to its' original state, but I couldn't
9. I booted from DVD again and tried to undo the partitioning, but it wouldn't let me, so I re-did steps 3-8 two more times
10. I installed rEFIt 0.12 and ran the blesser
11. I booted from the cd again and followed the steps for 'Installing Ubuntu alongside OS X (Dual Boot)'
12. I attempted to boot from the Linux option, but it gave me an error like 'There is no bootable drive. Insert a bootable disk and press enter to continue'
I am really really tired of this. What am I doing wrong?
Some extra details:
-In the past, I have successfully dual booted osx and xp
-I have ubuntu running in parallels (it doesn't go as fast as it would be if it were in boot camp)
Here's what it says when I run Partition Inspector
