I am trying to decide between a Trek 820 Mountain bike or a Trek 7000 Hybrid.?

Generally a mountain bike would have tires to be used on unpaved trails. A hybrid will usually have 700c wheels that roll easier but are meant for paved trails or at the least hard packed soil or gravel. It sounds like the 7000 suits your needs better.

I understand that the 7000 has a lighter aluminum frame. Does that really make a noticeable difference. I weigh 210, So is a lighter frame really that big of a difference??? Which one is more durable for riding on pavement and Bike paths? I guess it would be the 820 because of the wider rims + heavier weight, but I am not sure...At the shop near my house the 820 is on sale for $280 and the 7000 costs $360, but price is not that big a issue. Thanks!!!

your weight isn't an issue with the narrower tires. I weigh the same as you and ride on 700x23's. A hybrid will come with 700x25 or 700x28. Pump them to the max pressure and roll. It will ride much easier on pavement and paved bike paths than the MTB. Wide tires on pavement equals more rolling resistance. Suspension on pavement is unnecessary and wastes energy. Make sure your bike shop performs a thorough fitting for you.
