...and camping my way to seattle? Can you just buy 1 way plane tickets? is there a penalty? which car companies allow one way rentals? I have two teenagers. any thoughts one what would be cool to see both in the city and country? I would probably want to stick to the coast most of the way. Thanks for reading and replying!

Here's the real deal. You can buy a one way ticket but your ticket will be coded and TSA will hand scan you and you will be thoroughly searched going through security in Dallas. One way car rentals are very expensive. A rental car belongs to a certain airport so the people in Seattle have to get it back to SF. Be sure you read all the fine print on the car rental agreement before you plunge into it.

Sounds like a great idea, obviously going to cost you a lot of money.
Try Priceline.com, i'm pretty sure they do Flight/Car/Hotel all in one place. Not too sure if you can take a rental one-way, but hey good luck.

And as for sites, the Ocean.

One-way plane tickets can be a bargain, but if you live in Texas, don't you have to get home again? There's something called an "open jaw."
In your case you would fly to San Francisco and return from Seattle.
This could save you some money.

It can also save you $$ and hassles by using a travel agent. They know the deals with airlines, such as open jaws, routes, car rental deals, sites not to miss etc. etc.

Otherwise, why not look at California, Oregon and Washington's websites, request visitor's packages (maps & travel guides) AND get your kids involved in planning the trip!!! You all will enjoy it more that way.

No penalty. Much cheaper mostly. Most rental cos offer one way rentals at some sort of penalty, but it usually beats the gas money of driving all the way back. Other than that, never been to the west coast, unfortunately. Have fun!
